Do not treat every Student visa as permission to work 20 hours. The rules distinguish study categories, term time and the type of activity. Check your actual conditions, your sponsor's term dates and the proposed work before accepting a shift, freelance contract or business role.

Find the rule that matches your course

The current Student Rules, ST26 generally allow 20 hours a week in term time for specified full-time degree-level study, and 10 hours for specified below-degree study. Other study, including part-time study, can carry no employment permission. The exact sponsor and study category matter. Read the conditions shown with your immigration status and ask the university if the applicable category is unclear.

This distinction is important when friends compare jobs. Two students at the same institution may study at different levels or on different programmes. A short social-media answer cannot settle both cases. Record the programme, sponsor category and permission wording before discussing available hours with an employer. Where the wording and your understanding conflict, obtain clarification instead of choosing whichever interpretation allows more work.

Use the course's actual term dates

Ask the institution for the dates relevant to your particular programme. A postgraduate dissertation period or research programme may not follow the undergraduate holiday calendar. A teaching break is not automatically a vacation for work purposes. Obtain written confirmation rather than relying on the university's general public calendar or an employer's assumption that summer always means unrestricted hours.

Keep the term-date record with your employment paperwork and update it if the programme changes. If you hold more than one job, track the combined hours rather than applying a separate allowance to each employer. Record actual work, training and any other activity that needs checking. If the working week or a specific activity is uncertain, ask the university's immigration team to explain the relevant rule before scheduling it.

Check the activity as well as the hours

Some activities are restricted even when they involve only a few hours. The rules address self-employment, business activity, professional sport, entertainment and permanent full-time vacancies, with defined exceptions in some transition situations. A small freelance invoice is not automatically safe because the time spent is below a weekly limit. Nor does an overseas client make work performed while in the UK invisible to the conditions.

If considering delivery platforms, online tutoring, a monetised creative account, a directorship or an interest in a business, describe the actual arrangement and seek a specific assessment. Labels such as side hustle, unpaid internship or passive income do not decide the immigration classification. Write down who pays whom, where work is performed, contractual status, ownership and duties. Accurate facts make useful advice possible.

Distinguish a placement from an ordinary job

A course-related placement may operate under specific rules where it is an assessed and integral part of the course. Ask the university to confirm the arrangement and its sponsorship responsibilities before accepting it. An employer calling a role a placement does not by itself establish that it qualifies. Keep the course documentation, dates and sponsor confirmation alongside the contract.

Likewise, volunteering and unpaid work can require careful classification. A role can involve obligations that make it more than casual volunteering. Do not assume that receiving no wage removes every restriction. If the organisation cannot explain the arrangement clearly, pause and obtain advice. Your objective is to understand the activity before it starts, not to retrofit an explanation after a concern arises.

Plan the transition after study carefully

Finishing exams does not automatically change your immigration permission. Your Student conditions remain relevant until a lawful change or specific rule applies. The Rules include defined provisions around certain pending Skilled Worker, Graduate and Innovator Founder applications. Those provisions have conditions and should not be reduced to an automatic right to start any permanent job or business immediately after the course ends.

For a proposed transition, make a dated checklist: course completion status, sponsor notification where needed, current permission expiry, application submission and conditions of any pending period. Ask the university or a regulated adviser to check the exact arrangement before agreeing a start date. Do not let an employer's desired start date become the legal analysis.

Keep a private hours and activity log

Use a weekly tracker with each employer, actual hours and the applicable term status. Save contracts, payslips, shift records and written clarifications. Review the total before accepting extra work, particularly when two employers cannot see each other's schedules. A tracker is an administrative tool; it cannot make a prohibited activity lawful. If an error may have occurred, seek prompt individual advice rather than deleting records or changing the description.

The work-conditions pack helps you ask the right questions before taking a role. It also protects the study budget from unrealistic assumptions. Build tuition and core living costs around funding you can rely on, then treat any lawful employment income as uncertain until a real role and schedule exist.

A worked decision example

A postgraduate student receives two part-time offers and assumes each employer can schedule up to the stated weekly allowance. The combined-hours sheet exposes the problem before shifts are accepted. The student also asks the university whether the dissertation period is term time for that programme. This illustrative case is about checking the actual category, combined work and course calendar. It is not a universal hours decision for every Student holder or every unpaid activity.
