Do not make a household relocation plan until you have checked whether your course and circumstances permit dependants. For courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, an ordinary taught postgraduate course generally does not provide the same dependant options as an eligible doctoral or research-based higher degree. Course classification comes before relationship paperwork.
Establish the principal student's category
The official dependant guidance identifies the qualifying categories, including specified government-sponsored study and qualifying full-time postgraduate study. Read the course-duration and research requirements together. A programme called an MSc is not automatically taught-only, and a dissertation does not automatically make a course a research-based higher degree. Obtain the sponsor's written classification for the exact course and intake rather than relying on a prospectus slogan.
Existing families already in the UK can face transitional or extension circumstances that a short checker cannot decide. Record current permission, previous course dates and whether each family member is already a dependant. Do not assume a rule for someone joining from overseas is identical to a rule for extending an established dependant stay. Where the facts do not fit the standard description, seek a specific assessment before changing accommodation or employment.
Keep three decisions separate
First, can this student's course and immigration position support dependants? Second, does each proposed partner or child meet the relationship and other requirements? Third, can the household meet the evidence and financial requirements? A yes to the first question is only permission to investigate the next two. A marriage certificate cannot fix an ineligible course, and a qualifying doctorate cannot remove every requirement for a child.
Make a household table with one row per person. Record nationality, current country, relationship, current permission if any, intended application location and target travel date. Use ages at the relevant date rather than rounded ages. Keep sensitive identifiers outside the planning sheet. This exposes practical differences early: one person may need a medical appointment, another may need a translation and another may already hold permission that changes the evidence question.
Build relationship evidence around real records
For a partner, read the accepted relationship categories and evidence examples, then identify what your genuine records demonstrate. For a child, map parentage, living arrangements and any relevant consent or responsibility issues. Families with separation, adoption, sole responsibility, children approaching adulthood or different visa expiry dates should not rely on a generic pack. Write the question clearly and take it to a suitably regulated adviser.
Translate records through an appropriate process where required, and preserve the originals. If names vary between marriage, birth and passport documents, build a document chain explaining the variation. Do not submit a large bundle of private messages without considering relevance, privacy and the actual issue being evidenced. A clear relationship chronology and selected genuine documents are more useful than an indiscriminate archive.
Build a per-person money plan
Check the current dependant maintenance requirements and how they apply to the intended application dates. Add visa fees and the health surcharge for each person separately. Evidence amounts and real living costs serve different purposes. A household with a child may need larger accommodation, childcare, school transport and a contingency for one adult taking longer to find work. None of those can safely be inferred from the minimum evidence figure.
Run a one-income and a no-income scenario before assuming a partner's future earnings will fund the course. Include the cost of staggered travel if family members join later. Check the university's accommodation rules: a student room may not allow a partner or child. A cheap single-room quote is not a family housing budget. Ask for actual suitable housing options and list the deposit and advance-rent requirements separately.
Decide whether a staggered move makes sense
An illustrative doctoral student might travel first to enrol and arrange accommodation, with an eligible partner applying later. That can reduce initial logistical pressure, but it does not remove the partner's application requirements or guarantee an outcome. A second application date also changes document timing and travel costs. Compare the two plans on evidence readiness, cash needs, childcare, emotional cost and contingency rather than using a single cheapest-flight calculation.
If the course does not support dependants, do not disguise family residence as repeated visits or assume everyone can switch after arrival. Investigate each person's genuine options under the correct route. A different course chosen solely to fit an assumed immigration outcome may also be academically and financially inappropriate. Start with the study objective, then assess the household consequences honestly.
Complete the household decision sheet
Your final sheet should contain written course classification, a per-person evidence list, the required budget and the unresolved questions. Give every task an owner and a deadline. Review it again if the course, sponsor, intake or family circumstances change. Keep a copy of the source page date because policy summaries circulating in family groups often omit the date that determines which rule applies.
The practical outcome is a household plan that can withstand a pause. If the student's application is delayed, the family knows which bookings can move and which deadlines need attention. If the course does not permit dependants, that finding is useful before commitments are made. The resource helps organise the decision; it does not issue a family eligibility result.
A worked decision example
A couple sees the word research in a course description and begins comparing family flats. Before paying a holding deposit, the student asks the sponsor for the exact course classification and applicable dependant position. That answer determines whether the household proceeds with a joint relocation investigation or examines separate lawful options. The illustrative lesson is to resolve the principal course gate first; relationship documents and a larger budget cannot replace it.
