A CAS is an electronic sponsorship record, not merely an admission letter. Before applying, compare its details with your passport, course offer, fee payments and evidence. Ask the university to resolve inconsistencies before they are copied into the visa application.
Understand what the CAS does
The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies links you to a particular licensed sponsor and course. GOV.UK says you need a CAS reference before applying and must apply within six months of receiving it. That window is not a promise that every other date works: the course start, application window, funding period and latest arrival still need separate checking. Read the official course and CAS guidance before treating an emailed PDF as the whole record.
A university may use a pre-CAS portal, interview, deposit requirement or document check. These are steps in that institution's process. An agent can assist with communication, but cannot guarantee that the university will issue a CAS or that UKVI will grant permission. Keep the sponsor's written instructions in your own email account and verify any payment request using contact details from the institution's genuine website.
Check identity first
Compare the full name, passport number, nationality and date of birth with the passport you intend to use. Where names appear differently across certificates, record the difference and the genuine document connecting them. Do not silently standardise names in your own application while leaving the sponsorship record unchanged. An innocent mismatch becomes harder to explain once several versions have been submitted.
If the passport has been renewed after the offer or pre-CAS checks, ask the university whether its record has been updated. Keep the old passport where relevant, but use the current document as instructed. Record the date and person confirming any correction. The audit worksheet should distinguish an actual error from an intentional formatting difference, rather than marking every variation as a refusal risk.
Check the course you are actually accepting
Verify the qualification title, level, main study location and dates. A campus location affects practical housing and travel plans and may affect the money calculation. A research programme and a taught master's can have different implications for dependants. A course with a similar marketing name is not necessarily the same immigration classification. Ask for written clarification if the offer wording and CAS description appear to describe different programmes.
Check whether the course or nationality requires ATAS and whether any relevant English assessment is recorded correctly. If you have changed course, deferred an intake or moved campus, ask which parts of the CAS must change and whether a replacement is needed. Do not rely on an old record because the new course appears almost identical. The sponsor is the correct first contact for its own sponsorship information.
Reconcile tuition and accommodation payments
Build a simple payment ledger. For each transfer, record the amount, date, receiving institution, receipt and whether it appears in the sponsor's records. Compare that with tuition outstanding. If an eligible payment can reduce the amount you need to demonstrate, make sure the evidence path is clear. Money paid to an agent is not automatically money received by the university, and private rent is not automatically a permitted sponsorship-related offset.
An illustrative mismatch is a deposit received after the CAS was prepared. The family may reasonably think tuition outstanding has fallen, while the record still shows the old figure. The next action is to contact the university, obtain the correction or appropriate evidence and repeat the funding calculation. It is not to subtract the amount without checking how the payment is recognised.
Review previous study and the admission evidence
Read the qualifications or other evidence used by the sponsor. Check that the documents you hold are the same documents submitted for admission, with genuine translations where required. If applying from inside the UK, academic progression and switching rules may need attention. Do not assume that an offer settles those immigration questions. The university's international student team can explain its sponsorship assessment; complex history may require separate regulated advice.
Keep previous UK study, interrupted courses and visa history in a dated timeline. An application form may ask questions extending beyond what appears in the CAS. Answer those questions accurately even when the institution already knows the background. The useful preparation is consistency across records, not a rehearsed story that leaves difficult details out.
Resolve errors through an auditable channel
Send one concise correction request with a table: field, current value, proposed value and supporting document. Avoid multiple messages containing different instructions. Ask whether the sponsor will update its record, add a sponsor note or issue a replacement; let the institution decide the proper mechanism. Preserve the confirmation and check the final version again, including any new reference or expiry implications.
Finish with a decision log: clear to proceed after final date checks, awaiting sponsor correction, or considering deferral. Include the name of the person responsible for the next action. The printable CAS audit turns a vague feeling that the paperwork looks fine into a specific, repeatable comparison. It is particularly useful when a parent, agent and university have all handled different parts of the journey.
A worked decision example
A student changes campus after paying the deposit. The course name looks unchanged, so the family prepares funds using the first offer. The audit asks for the main study site and the sponsor's updated record, then revisits housing and the money calculation. This is an illustrative administrative decision, not a prediction of a visa outcome. The improvement is identifying one change that affects several workstreams before it is copied into the application.
